Dentistry has traditionally focused on replacing lost tooth structure. However, as understanding of dental biology, biomechanics, and materials science has evolved, a different philosophy has emerged: rather than simply replacing what is lost, can we restore the tooth by learning from nature itself?
This question forms the foundation of biomimetic dentistry. The natural tooth is an extraordinary biological structure in which composition, architecture, interfaces, mechanical behaviour, and biological functions are intricately integrated. Enamel provides strength and wear resistance, dentin provides resilience and stress distribution, the dentino-enamel junction provides a functional transition between tissues, and the pulp dentin complex demonstrates remarkable biological potential. Biomimetic dentistry seeks to understand these principles and translate them into materials and clinical strategies that preserve, restore, or replicate natural function.
Biomimetic Materials has been developed to provide an integrated understanding of this rapidly evolving field. Rather than presenting biomimetic materials merely as a collection of products or techniques, the book explores the scientific principles, biological foundations, material characteristics, clinical applications, and future possibilities underlying biomimetic approaches. The book begins by establishing the fundamental principles of biomimetics and exploring the natural tooth as a remarkable biological blueprint. It progresses from the principles of biomineralization and tissue engineering to regenerative approaches and the evolution of biomimetic materials, gradually connecting fundamental science with their clinical relevance. Particular emphasis is placed on their application in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, with a focus on preserving tooth structure, reproducing natural function, promoting biological interaction, and enhancing the long-term performance of restorative and endodontic therapies.
This book also explores emerging frontiers in the field, including nanotechnology, smart and self-healing materials, stimuli responsive systems, digital technologies, and personalized biomaterials. These developments reflect a broader transition in dental materials science from materials designed primarily to replace lost tissues towards materials capable of interacting with, responding to, and potentially contributing to the biological environment.
Throughout this book, the term biomimetic is used as more than a contemporary descriptor for an advanced material. Meaningful biomimicry requires an understanding of how natural tissues are structured, how they function and respond, and how materials can interact with these processes. At the same time, promising laboratory findings must be distinguished from established clinical evidence; critical appraisal and sound clinical judgement therefore remain essential.

Dr. Vidhi Gopalani is a Postgraduate Student in Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, a compassionate
researcher, and a passionate writer whose clinical work is driven by a deep commitment to providing
comprehensive dental care for children, including those with special healthcare needs. She has
completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Hitkarini Dental College and Hospital,
Jabalpur (M.P.), and is currently pursuing her Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Pediatric and
Preventive Dentistry at the same institution.
During her postgraduate training, Dr. Vidhi has developed a keen interest in cleft lip and palate
management, focusing on pre-surgical nasoalveolar molding (NAM) and comprehensive care for
affected infants.
Her enthusiasm for Pre-Surgical Nasoalveolar Molding (PNAM) stems from a desire to reduce
surgical burden, improve long-term outcomes, and provide holistic support to families navigating
complex care pathways from the very beginning of a child's life.
By merging clinical precision with a natural gift for clear, empathetic writing, Dr. Vidhi aims to
bridge the gap between advanced clinical techniques and practical execution. This book reflects her
unwavering dedication to empowering clinicians, postgraduate students, and parents with an
accessible, evidence based roadmap to early cleft intervention.
